Following big weeks for the Butler Bulldogs and St. John’s Red Storm, Kelan Martin and Shamorie Ponds were honored by the Big East on Monday morning, as Martin and Ponds were named the recipients of the Big East’s weekly awards.

Martin led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 week with road wins over Villanova and Xavier to make Butler the first team in Big East history to sweep both teams. Martin was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer in both contests, recording 22 points against Villanova and 25 against Xavier. Martin also averaged 7.5 rebounds per game for the week. This is Martin’s second Big East Player of the Week award this season.

Ponds put forth strong showings in St. John’s 1-1 week. In the road loss to Marquette, the freshman had 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Then, in St. John’s win over Georgetown, Ponds led all scorers with 24 points on 10-15 shooting. This was Ponds’ tenth 20+ point performance of the season. He currently leads Big East freshmen in scoring at 17.9 PPG (sixth overall in the conference). This is Ponds’ fifth Big East Freshman of the Week award.
