NBA Draft 2014: Bryce Cotton's possible landing spots

The NBA Draft is coming up on Thursday night. Where could the former Providence star end up? Big East Coast Bias' insider Harrison Malkin tries to answer that question.

Bryce Cotton, the former Providence star and top ten scorer in the nation, is suiting up for the NBA Draft on Thursday. The draft prospect solidified his place in Providence history with his outstanding senior year campaign, helping his team win the Big East Basketball Tournament this past season while also making a name for himself in the basketball world.

Come NBA Draft night, Cotton will find out if his name will be called and his dream will become a reality. Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio projects Bryce Cotton to be selected 48th overall in the NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. But that opinion is far from a consensus as DraftExpress.com projects him to go undrafted.

Cotton definitely has the résumé to back him up, but experts are not giving him love in mock drafts due to his small stature.

Cotton worked out with the Utah Jazz in his first official workout. While the Jazz are primarily focusing on drafting superstar players like Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker or Aaron Gordon, Bryce Cotton is an option available to them late in the draft, and is a player that can adapt and score or pass when needed. He proved in college that he could do all that and lead a team to the farthest point that they have been in many years. While experts are not projecting Cotton to be picked by the Jazz in their NBA Mock Drafts, the team did have enough interest in the 6-foot-1 guard to invite him to work out with their team. He would serve as a good backup for Gordon Hayward or Trey Burke, who both had great performances with the team last season.

Elsewhere, the Washington Wizards worked Cotton out early in June. J. Michael of CSN Washington reported that Bryce Cotton "opened eyes" during his workout with a 44-inch vertical, as the guard again displayed his athleticism at an NBA workout. Cotton would certainly not fit in with the Wizards as a starter right now because stars Bradley Beal and John Wall fill the void for their team in the guard position. However, Cotton would be a great option as a backup for either one of these players, as they both have faced injury issues early on in their young careers.
He is a multifaceted player and showed that in college, and would be able to adjust to the Wizards style of play because of that.

Finally, Bryce Cotton also worked out with the famed Boston Celtics, a team located right in the heart of the New England area. Celtics fans and the like would know that is where he thrived for four years with Providence College. He worked out along with other top scorers in college, most likely due to the Celtics not ranking highly on the offensive end in the spectrum a year ago. Cotton can fit the needs of the Celtics from a scoring standpoint, and would also be able to pass when needed to, showing that specifically against North Carolina in March Madness, when he made plenty of great passes. The Celtics already have two starting guards in Avery Bradley and Rajon Rondo, so Bryce Cotton would be a backup for the team, if they drafted him. But, with Phil Pressey waiting in the wings and Rajon Rondo on the trade block, his opportunities may have to wait should he land in Boston.

Simply put, Bryce Cotton had an amazing college career and finished it off by averaging 21.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists in a whopping 39.9 minutes per game in his senior season. Despite his size, Cotton displayed in his college career that he is a playmaker, which should matter more than size as a guard. Cotton plays hard and has all the tools to succeed at the next level, and NBA teams could be sorry if they pass on him, as he can be a great backup at the guard position and a future a role player in the starting spot.
