The season finales for Seton Hall and St. John’s go down on Saturday. The Pirates and the Red Storm are matched up against one another after a rollercoaster of a season in many, many ways. Now, both teams seek some added momentum before heading into next week’s Big East Tournament.
Seton Hall will have a big time matchup advantage in this game. That mismatch is on the inside, where The Hall ranks as one of the best teams in the Big East both on offense and defense. They’re the #1 team in the conference in 2PT FG% allowed, having allowed just 46.6 percent of 2-point tries to be converted in Big East play. And meanwhile, the Pirates are third in 2PT FG% at 52.1 percent. They are set to face a Red Storm squad who are dead last in the conference in 2-point defense, allowing 53 percent of 2-point tries to be made.
But on the flip side, St. John’s will have an advantage on the perimeter. The Pirates brick a lot from 3, having made just 31 percent of their 3-point attempts in Big East play. They stack up well-ish defensively, letting teams make just 33.2 percent of 3-pointers against them. Meanwhile, the Johnnies have hit 35.2 percent on 3-pointers in conference play, and Seton Hall ranks 10th in the conference in 3-point defense with 37.3 percent of 3-pointers made against them.
So in essence, we have two major mismatches coming in this game. You figure that whoever exploits the other the most, that team will be able to wrestle away control and the victory away from the other.
