Creighton University has suspended men’s basketball head coach Greg McDermott.

The suspension comes after remarks from McDermott that came to light earlier this week. McDermott told his players, per a tweet on his account:

“Guys, we got to stick together. We need both feet in. I need everybody to stay on the plantation. I can’t have anybody leave the plantation.”

The remark was made in the locker room to the team and the coaching staff following Creighton’s 77-69 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in Cincinnati back on Saturday, February 27th.

The suspension, as the release from Bruce Rasmussen indicates above, is effective immediately and covers all team activities. These activities include Creighton’s game this weekend against Butler. And according to the release, further sanctions are being considered, although not all of them will be shared publicly.

Creighton assistant coach Al Huss will serve as the interim head coach without McDermott’s presence.
