The UConn Huskies were winners in D.C. on Tuesday night.
Playing their first game in the Nation’s Capital since 2013, UConn defeated Georgetown 70-59 to move to 11-6 on the year. The win was their eighth in Big East play, propping them up to 8-6 in conference action.
The game started off about as slowly as you could possibly go. After 20 minutes of action, Georgetown took a mere 26-25 lead into the break. The Hoyas shot 25.9 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from 3. Countering that, UConn shot 45.5 percent from the floor, but bricked on all five of their 3-point attempts. Georgetown and UConn amassed marks of .703 and .676 points per possession, ghoulish numbers to say the very least.
The heat was ramped up a bit in the second half, however. UConn scored 1.5 points per possession while the Hoyas had 1.033. Granted, the Huskies’ mark was far better, as evident by the final score, but both were able to at least get over the 1.000 mark. That showed itslef in the shooting percentages as well. UConn shot 56.3 percent from the field while the Hoyas shot 46.2 percent. 3-pointers... let’s just not talk about them, shall we?
Leading the way for UConn were James Bouknight and R.J. Cole. Bouknight put up a game-high 20 points, while Cole scored 17 with seven assists, six steals and five rebounds. Bouknight had a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds. Adama Sanogo and Tyrese Martin each finished with eight points. Martin had five boards and two assists, while Sanogo had seven rebounds and two blocks. Elsewhere, Isaiah Whaley had seven points to go with his seven boards, and he, like Sanogo, had two blocks too.
The Hoyas picked up three double-figure scorers in Qudus Wahab, Dante Harris and Jamorko Pickett. Wahab led with 18 points and had 10 rebounds for a strong double-double performance. Harris and Pickett, meanwhile, each scored 10 points. Jahvon Blair had nine, but no other Hoya who saw the floor mustered up more than five points.
UConn pivots their attention now to Marquette, who they’ll play on Saturday. Georgetown will take on DePaul on Saturday, meanwhile, in the hopes of avoiding the start of a losing streak.
