Seton Hall’s matchup with Creighton couldn’t have gone any worse. The Pirates squandered a 16-point lead to the mighty Bluejays and surrendered a prodigious runt ha concluded with a Creighton win. The Pirates, down on their luck, must now pivot to the strongest kids on the block.
The Villanova Wildcats have been rolling. Amid COVID_19 pauses, the Wildcats have just one loss on their ledger through this point of the season. They are unblemished in Big East play and have won eight games in a row in general dating back to December 1. This will make their matchup with Seton Hall rather intriguing, as it’s a game featuring two teams going in opposite directions.
You should probably expect both teams to succeed from 3. Neither team possesses too great a perimeter defense, which is ironic since both have pretty solid 3-point offenses. The Wildcats rank 51st in the nation in 3PT FG% while Seton Hall is just above average at 136th. And on the flip side, the Pirates rank 312th in 3PT defense while Villanova ranks 274th. What’s more is that the Wildcats’ interior defense is a bit of a sieve. They’ve given up 52 percent of 2-point makes, which could play into the hand of the Pirates who rank 43rd in 2PT FG%.
What may well turn the tide though is that Villanova tends to play very clean games. They are the best team in the country in TO%, have committed turnovers only 11.9 percent of the time this year. Seton Hall does not force turnovers at a high rate, so Villanova will likely have a firm grasp of their possessions more often than they won’t. Seton Hall is pretty average, ranking 160th, and Villanova doesn’t force turnovers at a rather high rate either. So, it will be intriguing to see how the matchup plays in that regard.
