You know the best thing about March? The fact that there’s weekday afternoon basketball on multiple times throughout the month. There’s nothing better than watching sports when you should be paying attention to school or work.
Thursday’s Big East Tournament quarterfinal is no exception. In fact, it could end up being the game of the day.
The Providence Friars are in an interesting position at the moment. While they’re included on 85 of 102 brackets on BracketMatrix, the Friars likely need a win to avoid sweating for the rest of the weekend and to avoid heading to Dayton for the First Four for the second straight year. Add in the fact that it could be Kyron Cartwright and Rodney Bullock’s final Big East game (where does the time go?), and you’ll likely see a ferocious and hungry Friar bunch.
On the other side, though, you have the Creighton Bluejays. At 21-10, Creighton has nothing to worry about on Selection Sunday as far as actually making the Tournament. Their worries are more seeding-based, as BracketMatrix currently has them on all 102 brackets, but seeded anywhere from 7-10. That’s obviously a significant gap, especially considering the 8/9 seed plays the 1-seed in the second round with a victory, something you would imagine Creighton would like to avoid. Much like Providence has two players in Bullock and Cartwright who don’t want the Big East journey to end, Creighton has Marcus Foster and Toby Hegner (and, let’s be honest, Khyri Thomas).
The teams split the season series, 1-1. The home team won both times. It’s hard to get a read on what’s going to happen, but a win will go a long way for either side.
