Big East Coast Bias Power Rankings: Feb. 13

Are these the most contentious yet?

NCAA Basketball: St. John at Villanova Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Hold onto your hats. These might be the most contentious BECB Power Rankings yet.

We had 17 ballots submitted this week from our team as well as a few others. These others included:

  • Anonymous Eagle
  • Besay (of AE)
  • Connor Lagore (of AE)
  • Joel (of Banners on the Parkway)
  • Norman Rose (of Rumble in the Garden)

With that said, here are the rankings...

10. DePaul Blue Demons

(Score: 9.67; Highest Vote: 8; Lowest Vote: 10)

“DePaul has won as many games in a row entering this week as Villanova. That has to count for something, right?” - Matt Ambrose

“Punching Providence in the mouth in the fashion in Friartown that DePaul did was not something I saw coming.” - Chris Novak

9. Georgetown Hoyas

(Score: 8.81; Highest Vote: 7; Lowest Vote: 10)

“This team has surpassed my expectations. I really thought they would have a firm hold on last place in the conference this season. They’re still going to be playing first night of the Big East Tournament, but this team is going to be playing a Thursday game as well.” - Matt Ambrose

“Georgetown grabbed a very impressive win against Seton Hall, despite letting the Pirates creep back into the game. I’m excited to see what they’re capable of in the 2018-19 season, but they can play spoiler this season for sure.” - Chris Novak

8. Marquette Golden Eagles

(Score: 7.50; Highest Vote: 6; Lowest Vote: 9)

“All offense, no defense. Seton Hall showed how you lose to this team, and that’s by not playing defense yourselves.” - Matt Ambrose

“It’s looking like an NIT year for Marquette. What that means for them going forward? Time will tell. Let’s see what they can do down the stretch, though.” - Chris Novak

7. Seton Hall Pirates

(Score: 6.50; Highest Vote: 5; Lowest Vote: 10)

“Seton Hall is in some kind of rut right now. But they’ve been in this spot before, and have dug themselves out of it. Can they do it again?” - Chris Novak

6. Providence Friars

(Score: 6.38; Highest Vote: 5; Lowest Vote: 9)

“I have always thought that Providence was the most inconsistent team in the conference this season, but this past week proved that they aren’t alone in that category.” - Matt Ambrose

“Health is an issue for Providence right now. Unfortunately, that’s come at a really crucial part of the year.” - Chris Novak

5. St. John’s Red Storm (5)

(Score: 4.75; First-Place Votes: 5; Lowest Vote: 8)

“St. John’s is on pace to win the National Championship. Get the parade ready.” - Matt Ambrose

“St John’s may never lose again.” - Kevin Urquhart

“Well, when you rack up wins against Duke and Villanova and then defeat Marquette, you’re going to get first-place votes. Those are the rules.” - Chris Novak

4. Butler Bulldogs

(Score: 3.94; Highest Vote: 3; Lowest Vote: 5)

“I think Butler is allergic to having a bad season. They were picked 8th in the preseason poll. You just knew that was going to be too low. They had a gauntlet week against Xavier and Villanova, and realistically could have won both games.” - Matt Ambrose

“The Bulldogs need TWO (count ‘em, TWO) wins this week.” - Kevin Urquhart

“Butler had a tough week against the two best teams in the conference. Luckily, they’ve now got three straight home games. A 3-0 spot for them would be pivotal.” - Chris Novak

3. Creighton Bluejays

(Score: 3.56; Highest Vote: 3; Lowest Vote: 5)

“The Bluejays face unquestionably their stiffest test of the season on Tuesday night when they host Bemidji State in Omaha. Don’t sleep on the Beavers. This game is destined to go down to the wire.” - Matt Ambrose

“Creighton lost in controversial fashion on Saturday. That being said they still have a shot at a 2-0 week this week and then things get fun next week against Butler and Villanova.” - Chris Novak

2. Xavier Musketeers

(Score: 2.19; Highest Vote: 2; Lowest Vote: 3)

“Granted they beat the teams they should, Xavier could essentially lock up the Big East Regular Season Title with a win against Villanova on Saturday.” - Matt Ambrose

“My take after the Butler-Xavier game was essentially this: Xavier is unguardable.” - Kevin Urquhart

“I’m still laughing hysterically at people who doubted this Xavier team before the season, even after the Elite Eight run and the fact that they brought back damn near everybody. Did you REALLY think this team wouldn’t be a top-tier contender in the Big East? And in the nation as well.? The Musketeers could damn well get a 1 seed, and might deal a serious blow to Villanova’s chances at a five-peat later this week in Cincy.” - Chris Novak

1. Villanova Wildcats (12)

(Score: 1.31; First-Place Votes: 12; Lowest Vote: 3)

“Yes, they lost this week. I don’t care. It’s going to take a lot to convince me that Villanova isn’t the best team in this conference.” - Matt Ambrose

“Never stood a chance against the Johnnies.” - Kevin Urquhart

“Villanova is faltering a little bit due to depth and health issues. It’s at a bad time, but there’s still too much talent on this team to doubt them right now.” - Chris Novak
