2016 All-Big East Baseball Teams & regular season awards announced

Xavier and St. John's came away as big winners

As the Big East baseball tournament is set to begin Thursday afternoon in Aberdeen, Maryland, the conference announced the 2016 All-Big East teams and other regular season awards on Wednesday afternoon.

As you may expect, Xavier and St. John's reaped the majority of the spoils.

Big East Player of the Year

Andre Jernigan - Xavier, SS

Jernigan led the Musketeers to their first Big East title with his conference-leading 12 home runs, and his 35 RBI.

Jernigan's solid defensive play also led the Musketeers to the second-highest fielding percentage in the Big East at .974, and led the Musketeers to the top of the Big East in double plays turned at 51.

Big East Pitcher of the Year

Thomas Hackimer - St. John's, RP

For the second straight year, a St. John's pitcher has been named the Big East Pitcher of the Year.

Hackimer was second in the Big East in wins at 7-1, and fourth in saves with eight. His ERA is a minuscule 0.72 in 26 appearances. Additionally, Hackimer struck out 67 batters, and opponents hit just .094 against him.

Hackimer was also named the Big East Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Big East Freshman of the Year

Josh Shaw - St. John's, 2B

Shaw is the second St. John's player in the last three seasons to be named Big East Freshman of the Year. He finished second on St. John's in batting average at .302, and led the Red Storm with 41 RBI.

Big East Coaching Staff of the Year

Xavier

As noted above, the Musketeers took home their first Big East title this season. Manager Scott Googin took Xavier from a 14-28 record at one point this season to a surge down the stretch to lock up the #1 seed in the Big East Tournament.
