This BIG EAST season has been interesting to say the least. The conference has been one of the more exciting to watch this season, and the best part? It's about to get crazier.
The top and bottom two are already decided
The Villanova Wildcats and Xavier Musketeers are the cream of the crop and there is no doubt about it.
Both teams are ranked in the Top 10 in the country are almost certain to be a lock in this year's NCAA Tournament when March rolls around. Both 'Nova and Xavier have lost a combined four games in conference play and it looks to stay that way as both teams keep rolling. Ideally, we would like to see this run by both teams end in both of them playing each other in the final of the BIG EAST Tournament as they did last year which ended with a Villanova win.
What a rematch that would be.
But both teams aren't perfect either. They have each escaped tough games during conference play and one slip up could change the complexity of the standings or knock them out of the BIG EAST Tournament when March rolls around.
Just like the top two have been decided, the bottom two of the BIG EAST has been decided as well. The DePaul Blue Demons and St.John's Red Storm have both struggled this season, especially the Red Storm considering they still haven't won a conference game this season.
DePaul hasn't fared much better, winning only two games in conference play, but both teams are certainly no pushovers this year as both have given teams some struggle. DePaul even upset Providence last week and that was a sign that especially in college basketball, anything can happen.
Everything else? It's up for grabs
While the top and the bottom of the standings are set, everything else is up for grabs, and it's amazing.
Just two games separate third place Seton Hall and the seventh place Marquette, and each week the standings can change. Every time one of these teams play each other it's a fantastic game and they all are evenly matched. It's just pure chaos and nobody knows what is going to happen.
The BIG EAST Tournament is about a month away and expect chaos from that as well. The tournament has seen many runs from unexpected teams to win the tournament (Kemba Walker anyone?) and that's what makes it great.
Who knows, maybe we can see a run from Seton Hall who have shown they can play with the big guns.
Or we could see a run from a Butler Bulldogs team that can score the basketball in a hurry and has one of the most talented youngsters in the conference in Kelan Martin.
Maybe we could see a run by Providence who are led by the duo of Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil.
Anyone of these teams can make a run and they have the players to do so. These teams will test Xavier and 'Nova and will create some big matchups heading down the stretch of the regular season and into the BIG EAST Tournament.
The BIG EAST can get six teams into the tournament this year. Outside of 'Nova and Xavier, Seton Hall, Providence Friars, Butler, and the Creighton Bluejays could all make 'The Big Dance.' The chances of that happening are slim, but it could happen. You never know.
March Madness is about a month away and things are beginning to pick up in the BIG EAST. Get ready for even more twists and turns as we head towards the NCAA Tournament, everyone.
