Gamblin’ Info
Butler is an 8.5-point favorite over St. John’s, according to OddsShark.com.
The Stakes
Butler is looking to continue their nonconference momentum into league play after finishing 11-1 in their first 12 games. The Bulldogs have a date with the Villanova Wildcats on Jan. 4, so they are looking to notch wins against both St. John’s and Providence on the 1st before that game takes place.
Kelan Martin is also only 14 points shy of the 1,000-point club, a feat which he should certainly accomplish in Queens tonight.
St. John’s is also looking to stay on the upswing after defeating Syracuse in their final nonconference game of the season. The Red Storm ended their nonconference season at 6-7 and looks to improve in Big East play. St. John’s also boasts a 4-1 record at home at the midway point in the season.
Inside the Numbers
The Bulldogs have swept St. John’s in the regular season series meetings the last two years. Butler has been shooting 49.5 percent from the field which ranks 22nd nationally while St. John’s has been averaging 50 percent from the field in their home contests.
Freshman Shamorie Ponds of St. John’s is coming off a huge (BIG EAST Freshman of the Week) week after scoring 21 points and notching seven assists and six rebounds in the Red Storm’s win over Syracuse.
Butler’s Andrew Chrabascz is also coming off a season-high 28 point performance in the team’s win against Vermont. He ranks third in the conference in 3-point percentage on the season at 52 percent.
