Big East Coast Bias Nonconference Awards

As Big East play opens, let’s hand out some mid-season awards.

NCAA Basketball: Georgetown at Xavier Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Who is the Big East Player of the Year through nonconference play? Freshman of the Year? Coach of the Year? 17 of our writers gave their picks. The winners are in bold.

Big East Player of the Year

Josh Hart, Villanova (16 votes, 94.1%)

Maurice Watson, Creighton (1 vote, 5.9%)

No real surprise here. Hart has played exceptionally well. Watson has a case too, as the nation’s assist leader going into Big East play. If Josh Hart played in a different conference, Watson would likely be the favorite for the award.

Big East Freshman of the Year

Justin Patton, Creighton (9 votes, 52.9%)

Kamar Baldwin, Butler (3 votes, 17.6%)

Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s (2 votes, 11.6%)

Sam Hauser, Marquette (1 vote, 5.9%)

Myles Powell, Seton Hall (1 vote, 5.9%)

Other (1 vote, 5.9%)

No surprise here, either. While Baldwin and Ponds have been strong for their teams, Patton has been a huge difference maker all season long for Creighton.

Big East Coach of the Year

Chris Holtmann, Butler (7 votes, 41.2%)

Jay Wright, Villanova (5 votes, 29.4%)

Greg McDermott, Creighton (5 votes, 29.4%)

These are really only the only options throughout the conference. All three coaches are in the National Coach of the Year discussion at the moment, and if trends continue, the Big East COY race will be incredibly heated.

All-Big East First Team

Josh Hart, Villanova (17 votes, 100%)

Marcus Foster, Creighton (12 votes, 70.6%)

Maurice Watson, Creighton (10 votes, 58.8%)

Angel Delgado, Seton Hall (9 votes, 52.9%)

Kelan Martin, Butler (7 votes, 41.2%)

Trevon Bluiett, Xavier (7 votes, 41.2%)

All-Big East Second Team

Khadeen Carrington, Seton Hall (8 votes, 50%)

Jalen Brunson, Villanova (7 votes, 41.2%)

Kris Jenkins, Villanova (7 votes, 41.2%)

Rodney Pryor, Georgetown (6 votes, 37.5%)

Eli Cain, DePaul (4 votes, 25%)

Edmond Sumner, Xavier (4 votes, 25%)
