As we enter Big East play, we here at Big East Coast Bias thought it wise to rank where we see the teams at the conclusion of the nonconference schedule.
Along with 20 of our bloggers, Anonymous Eagle, VU Hoops, Rumble in the Garden, and Casual Hoya contributed to the rankings this week. As you’ll notice below, each voter’s ballot is available.
10. DePaul Blue Demons
(Score: 9.54; Highest Vote: 9; Lowest Vote: 10; Last Week: 9)
“DePaul went to Vegas and lost two basketball games, which isn’t as bad as some of the things people lose in Vegas.” - Robert O’Neill
“On one hand, DePaul’s spent part of their season in Miami and Las Vegas. On the other...” - Chris Novak
9. St. John’s Red Storm
(Score: 9.46; Highest Vote: 9; Lowest Vote: 10; Last Week: 10)
“St. John’s beat Syracuse by 33 at the Carrier Dome. It was hilarious.” - Robert O’Neill
“St. John’s is proving on a yearly basis that Syracuse can’t hang with the new Big East.” - Chris Novak
8. Marquette Golden Eagles
(Score: 7.50; Highest Vote: 5; Lowest Vote: 8; Last Week: 7)
“Marquette beat a couple bad teams. Nothing to really see here.” - Robert O’Neill
“Year 3 with Wojo in Big East play should likely be better than the first two. Right?” - Chris Novak
7. Georgetown Hoyas
(Score: 7.08; Highest Vote: 6; Lowest Vote: 8; Last Week: 8)
“Georgetown, like St. John’s, beat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. It was hilarious then, too.” - Robert O’Neill
“Quietest six-win streak in America?” - Chris Novak
6. Providence Friars
(Score: 6.13; Highest Vote: 5; Lowest Vote: 8; Last Week: 5)
“Providence ends their nonconference schedule with three losses. Two were pretty good, one was to Boston College.” - Robert O’Neill
“Providence and Boston College: Alternating victories forever.” - Chris Novak
5. Seton Hall Pirates
(Score: 5.13; Highest Vote: 4; Lowest Vote: 6; Last Week: 6)
“Rutgers may be on the up and up, but the Pirates are still the kings of New Jersey” - Robert O’Neill
“Well, at least they didn’t lose to Rutgers. Even if RU is better than they’ve been.” - Chris Novak
4. Xavier Musketeers
(Score: 4.13; Highest Vote: 3; Lowest Vote: 5; Last Week: 4)
“It’s strange how people seem to think Xavier is having a ‘down year’ despite them being ranked in the top 20 of the AP Poll for most of the season. However, they still need a few big wins in Big East play before I’m sold on them.” - Robert O’Neill
“Not sure how to assess Xavier right now, but I’m certain that they’ll probably make a big move in conference play.” - Chris Novak
3. Butler Bulldogs
(Score: 2.58; Highest Vote: 2; Lowest Vote: 3; Last Week: 3)
“The Bulldogs came that close to hopping Creighton for #2 in this week’s Power Rankings” - Robert O’Neill
“Blue is back on the sidelines for Butler, so, really: Anything from here is just gravy.” - Chris Novak
2. Creighton Bluejays
(Score: 2.46; Highest Vote: 2, Lowest Vote: 4; Last Week: 2)
“The Bluejays almost lost to Oral Roberts, which would have been bad. They didn’t though. They’re 12-0. ” - Robert O’Neill
“I, for one, look forward to the potential matchup of unbeatens this weekend between Creighton and Villanova.” - Chris Novak
1. Villanova Wildcats (24)
(Score: 1.00; First-Place Votes: 24; Last Week 1)
“The Wildcats really got 24/24 first place votes. It’s tough to argue.” - Robert O’Neill
“Can’t really suggest anyone else for the top spot unless something goes down this weekend.” - Chris Novak
