The Big East handed out its weekly awards on Monday, and they can keep it simple and ship them both out to the 402/531, as the Creighton Bluejays swept the Big East Player and Freshman of the Week award honors.
Bluejays guard Marcus Foster and center Justin Patton are the recipients of this week’s honors. Foster and Patton have each gotten off to blistering starts to the season and, as such, were honored for their terrific efforts last week. It’s the first time this season that a Bluejay has taken these awards as Rodney Pryor, Josh Hart, Sam Hauser and Myles Powell were the previous beneficiaries.
Creighton, who went 2-0 in the week against Ole Miss and Loyola, were aided especially by the efforts of Foster and Patton. Foster dropped 25 points in the Bluejays’ championship victory over the Rebels in the Paradise Jam final. He shot 9-for-15 from the field, grabbed six boards, dished out three assists and committed just one turnover. Foster followed that performance up with a 16-point effort against Loyola. The K-State transfer did so while shooting 60 percent on 10 shots, pulled down a rebound, and chipped in two assists and a steal.
Patton meanwhile exploded in the game against Loyola, scoring a current career-high of 17 points. He was perfect from the field, going 8-for-8 on his field goal attempts. Patton added six boards and a steal to his line that night. In the previous outing against Ole Miss, the Omaha native shot 5-for-7 from the field, scoring 11 points, and grabbed five boards, blocked two shots and picked up two assists.
