Series History
These two teams have met once previously, as far back as last Sunday. In the Tire Pros Invitational Championship Game, Xavier prevailed over Northern Iowa 67-59. Xavier’s two stars -- junior Trevon Blueitt and sophomore Edmond Sumner, combined for 38 points. After playing to an tied score at the end of the first half, the Musketeers used a 17-4 run to jump out to a double digit lead. While Northern Iowa clawed back, Xavier survived en route to the early season tournament championship.
The Stakes
While the Musketeers have already defeated the Panthers, two wins over a possible high-seeded NCAA Tournament team would greatly enhance their resume. For Northern Iowa, this game is an opportunity to strike back for Sunday’s defeat, as well as adding an impressive road win to their record.
Betting Odds
Per Oddshark, Xavier is favored at -9.5.
Players to Watch
Northern Iowa | Jeremy Morgan
As Northern Iowa’s leading scorer and rebounder, senior Jeremy Morgan has thrived in a larger role this year. After playing a key part in their Sweet 16 run in 2015-2016, Morgan became the offense’s focal point. He is averaging 17 points, about eight rebounds, and 45 percent from beyond the arc.
Xavier | Edmond Sumner
The sophomore from Detroit is being somewhat of mixed results so far this year. While his point totals have risen to 16.6, he is shooting an atrocious 9.1 percent from 3-point range. He is also struggling to hold onto the ball, turning it over 4.1 times a game. If Xavier wants to contend for a Big East title, they need him to play more efficiently.
