Big East weekly awards: Josh Hart, Myles Powell earn Player and Freshman of the Week honors

After a jam-packed week, two players stood out.

The Big East announced on Monday morning that Villanova’s Josh Hart and Seton Hall’s Myles Powell had been named the conference’s Player and Freshman of the Week.

Both Hart and Powell helped lead their teams to an undefeated week. Hart led the Villanova Wildcats to a 4-0 week which included a road win against Purdue and three wins in the Charleston Classic to give ‘Nova its fourth consecutive preseason tournament title. Hart averaged 20.8 points in the four victories this week, including a game-high 24 against Purdue and a career-high 30 against Wake Forest in the Charleston Classic, where Hart was later named the tournament’s MVP.

Powell, meanwhile, helped Seton Hall pick up a big road victory in the Gavitt Games against Iowa. He led the Pirates with 26 points in the 91-83 win, and was 9-14 from the field. Not too shabby for your first career road game.

While JP Macura or Maurice Watson could have been considered for Player of the Week, it’s tough to argue with the Big East’s selection of Hart. Macura and Watson both made appearances on the Big East Honor Roll.
