The Big East Conference announced on Monday morning that Georgetown Hoyas guard Rodney Pryor and Marquette Golden Eagles forward Sam Hauser are the first recipients of the conference’s Player and Freshman of the Week honors for the 2016-17 season.
Both Pryor and Hauser excelled in victories for their respective teams over the weekend. Pryor, a former Robert Morris Colonials hooper, was dialed in during his debut for the Hoyas as he scored 32 points in their victory over USC Upstate. He shot 13-for-16 from the field including a remarkable 6-for-8 from the 3-point line. Pryor added a rebound to his line and committed just one turnover in 30 minutes of action.
Hauser, meanwhile, was impactful in the Golden Eagles’ trouncing of Vanderbilt. The Stevens Point, Wisconsin native scored 14 points and shot 5-for-8 from the field including a 4-for-7 mark from downtown. Hauser also added three rebounds, an assist and a steal with no turnovers in 19 minutes.
Overall, no real surprises here. Angel Delgado of Seton Hall could have certainly gotten consideration after a pair of double-doubles over the weekend in wins over Central Connecticut and Fairleigh Dickinson. Nevertheless, congrats to Pryor and Hauser, both of whom we haven’t likely heard the last from this season.
