Oberservations from Nike EYBL session 1

The Big East had a large presence at the event watching some 2016 and 2017 players.

The first session is in the books for the Nike EYBL and there were a lot of breakout stars that will be receiving offers and some names that should be on the lookout in the future. There were a lot of Big East coaches in attendance, including John Thompson III, Jay Wright, Steve Wojciechowski, Chris Mack and some DePaul assistants to watch the entire weekend. Here are some players that played a great weekend and my thoughts on how they played.

Cassius Winston- The guard was really impressive and had a good weekend. The guard can get to the lane anytime he wants, even though he is not as explosive as some other guards. He can really score the ball, but also create for his teammates when he drives because he creates so much attention when he is in the lane. One of the things I saw that really impressed me is the way he shoots the ball in transition. When he gets his feet set, he is really good at that. The two Big East schools that is like him are Georgetown and Marquette, but the Golden Eagles have offered and coming after him the hardest. Georgetown watched him a few times this weekend and had him on campus for a visit a while back. The Hoyas are expected to offer soon.

Udoka Azibuike- The big man has looked different from the last time I saw him. Azubuike looked really good in the paint and had the attention of many college coaches, but Georgetown still has been in contact with him. His post moves are really good, but he has also really toned up and body is in much better shape than he was last year.

Temple Gibbs- The point guard really did a good job at running the show and getting his teammates involved, but he did not do a good job at being as aggressive as he should have. He was kicking the ball out to his teammates and driving the ball to the lane, He did get to the free throw line and was drawing fouls. One thing that he wants to work on is making sure he is shooting the right way and making the right decision at the right time because he kept forcing his shot at the wrong time.

DJ Harvey- Harvey was impressive as it gets and got to the lane. Harvey shot the ball really well and athleticism played a key part in him getting to the foul line because he is really good at that. Georgetown head coach John Thompson III was watching the game and so was his assistant. Georgetown is going hard after the 2017 player .

Trae Young- A shot making guard who did the intangibles like get his teammates involve and create for others like Michael Porter. Young does a good job at creating a shot for himself around the mid-range area. Georgetown is showing interest in him and wants to find out more.

Austin Wiley- The big man was really impressive down on the block and has good upper body strength. Wiley has good footwork for someone his size, especially around the basket. He does not want to be a big man that can get out and shoot the ball, because he really wants to be physical and do the dirty work in the paint. Someone like a Dwight Howard who scores all of his points in the paint. Wiley will be a name to remember and Georgetown is expressing interest and sending letters. Wiley likes the style that they play.

Mamidi Dikate- The big man is Slinky tall player that is a great defense presence around the rim and is developing his offensive game and trying to be more consistent on that side of the ball. The one thing going forward that he will need to do is work on his strength, so he can be a force on offense. Georgetown has offered him and he was planned to take an official, but things are up in the air right now.
