Fresh off their first win of the season against Wagner on Friday night, the St. John's Red Storm are back in action as they'll welcome the UMBC Retrievers to Carnesecca Arena for a Maui Invitational campus site game. Here are three things to look for during the game.
Fedrico Mussini
The freshman guard was one of the big keys to the Red Storm's opening night victory. He totaled a game-high 18 points on 6-11 shooting, and also grabbed two rebounds and recorded three assists.
Mussini will have to be sharp on both sides of the ball if St. John's wants to compete with the great guard play UMBC has.
Don't underestimate the Retrievers
UMBC, in their first game of the season, lost to Wake Forest by a score of 78-73. With 1:45 to play, Wake Forest only led 72-71.
The Retrievers aren't the most talented team in the country, as they went 4-26 last season, but if Friday night was any indication, these dogs have a lot of fight in them. St. John's will have to be careful to not overlook them.
A player to watch is guard Jourdan Grant, who had 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists against Wake on Friday night.
Maui Invitational
Game-time projected temperature in Queens: 58
Game-time projected temperature in Maui: 77
58 for New York in November isn't bad, but I bet you both of these teams wish they were playing the game on the beaches of Maui. St. John's actually gets to go, but for the Retrievers, this is the closest they'll get.
St. John's needs to pick up a victory here, though, because UMBC is worse than the majority of teams they'll see in Maui. If they can't get a home win against the Retrievers, the Red Storm may have some issues on the island.
