The Xavier Musketeers and Georgetown Hoyas have tangled up in the conclusion to FOX Sports 1's Big East New Year's Eve Marathon, and after 20 minutes, the score is just 31-25 in favor of the Musketeers.
Leading the way for Xavier is the play of Remy Abell and James Farr. Farr, who brought down a big put back dunk early on in the first half, has seven points and is a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. He's made his one and only 3-point attempt and has two rebounds and an assist to boot. Abell, meanwhile, is also impeccable, knocking down both of his shooting attempts from the field, including a 3-pointer. Abell has no rebounds, but like Farr, has an assist.
Georgetown is being carried by the conference's Preseason Player of the Year in D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The junior guard from Indianapolis has seven points of his own and is shooting 2-for-3 on his field goal attempts in 10 minutes of action.
The biggest storyline going into the second half will be whether or not Xavier can get Matt Stainbrook involved. Surprisingly, the big man has just four points through 16 minutes of play and has taken just two field goal attempts on this Wednesday evening. He's helped out in other areas -- grabbing five rebounds, getting a steal, and holding his foe in Joshua Smith to just two points -- but if Xavier wants to maintain their lead they are going to have to find ways for him to get points.
Other notables:
Georgetown has hedged Xavier in field goal percentage 43 percent to 41 percent. However, the Musketeers lead in 3-point percentage 44 percent to 29. Free throw percentage leans towards XU by the tune of 71 percent-63 percent.
The Hoyas lead in the rebounding department 17-15 and defensively, 12-10. Both teams are even at five offensive boards.
Georgetown has 10 points in the paint to Xavier's six, and GU has four second chance points to XU's two.
Xavier is scoring 1.033 points per possession (30 possessions) while Georgetown has scored 0.806 points per possession (31 possessions). The Musketeers has a TO% of 13.3 percent, and the Hoyas are committing turnovers 25.8 percent of the time.
Enjoy the second half!
