Marquette opens the Orlando Classic with a game against a 3-0 Georgia Tech squad Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET from the HP Field House on ESPN2. The 2-2 Golden Eagles are led by senior forward Juan Anderson who is averaging 16.3 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Anderson scored 43 combined points in the last two games, one a loss to Summit League foe Omaha at home.
Picked to finish 13th in the ACC, Georgia Tech owns wins over rival Georgia as well as Alabama A&M and IPFW. The Yellow Jackets are led by sophomore Quinton Stephens, a lanky 6-9 forward from Atlanta who averages 14 points per game. Stephens scored 22 points against Georgia while going 6-8 from downtown. Marquette will have to play better than they have been to find a way past Georgia Tech.
The all-time series with Georgia Tech is tied at 3-3, with the most recent matchup coming during Marquette’s run to the 1977 title game. Rich Hollenberg and and Tim Welsh will be on the call Thursday. Marquette will face either Michigan State or Rider in the second round Friday night.
