The St. John's Red Storm will take on the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders at the Carnesseca Arena for first game of the 2014 season. The Johnnies were arguably a win away from making the NCAA Tournament last year and even with the departure of Jakarr Sampson, St. John's looks like they have one of the best teams in the Big East. According to the pre-season polls, the Red Storm are predicted to finish third in the regular season standings and D'Angelo Harrison is a preseason first team All-Big East representative, and Rysheed Jordan is a preseason second team All-Big East representative. Harrison is probably going to be the leading scorer in the Big East and he should look to start his season in fantastic fashion.
NJIT finished 11-13 last year and the only team they played in the Big East was Seton Hall. They lost 71-55 against one of the worst teams in the Big East and this year NJIT will play against Marquette, Villanova, and Michigan.
NJIT lost to Providence by one two years ago but I think the Johnnies will win the game pretty easily. But, as we've seen, college basketball has shown that it's no stranger to oddities.
