The Chicago Tribune had an interesting look at the status of DePaul's new basketball arena on Wednesday. This is what DePaul's Athletic Director, Jean Lenti Ponsetto had to say about the arena:
We’re still feeling like -- worst case -- (opening) in time for the Big East season in 2017," Lenti Ponsetto said. "(But) 2016-017 was what we were always shooting for. We were hoping for November (2016) but it could be that it’s later.
Well, that is a bit unsettling. The groundbreaking seems to still be on track for this winter, but if you know anything about winter in Chicago, you know how unpredictable the weather can be. If it comes down to having to get shovels in the ground in January or February, and Chicago has a winter like last year, DePaul is going to have some issues.
Also, if ground is going to be broken in early 2015, and it takes 22 months to complete, simple math will tell you the chances of it being ready for the 2016-2017 season is very slim.
Update (2/6/15): It's almost as if I am a psychic. DePaul announced today that their new arena wouldn't be ready until "Late 2017". That throws the 2016-2017 season out the window, and possibly part of the 2017-2018 season.
What do you think, DePaul fans? Any worry about when the new arena will be ready? Let us know in the comments!
