Butler coaching news: Kampen, Crone join staff

Former Butler players Emerson Kampen and Brandon Crone complete interim coach Chris Holtmann's staff

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

With the ongoing medical leave of Brandon Miller, and the promotion of assistant Chris Holtmann to interim Head Coach, Butler had a couple vacancies to fill on their coaching staff. They did that Tuesday, when the school announced the hiring of former Butler players Emerson Kampen and Brandon Crone.

Kampen, who was already on staff as a graduate assistant, will be promoted to Holtmann's old role of assistant coach. Butler fans will likely remember Kampen from his time as a player from 2008-2012.  If Brandon Miller makes a comeback this season, Holtmann will go back to being an assistant coach, and Kampen will go back to being a graduate assistant, most likely.

Crone returns to Butler to take over as Director of Basketball Operations, a position vacant since July, after a brief assistant coaching stint at Nova Southeastern. Butler fans will remember Crone from his time as a player from 2003-07, during which he was twice named captain of the Bulldogs.

These coaches both fit the Butler mold of hiring former players and grooming them on the coaching staff to one day possibly take the reigns.
