Kyle Flood’s head coaching debut was more auspicious than that of Pitt’s Paul Chryst, but the contests was more evenly matched than many would have expected. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights waited until midway through the second half to get up to full speed, but came away with a 24-12 win against the Tulane Green Wave Sept. 1 at the Mercedes Benz Superdome (box score).
Quarterback Gary Nova was completed 11 of 20 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Jawan Jamison rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown. Savon Huggins added 46 yards. Jamison and Brandon Coleman each had 41 yards receiving. Coleman also had a touchdown.
The Rutgers defense allowed Tulane quarterback 34 completions for 254 yards, with a touchdown and interception. Wideout Ryan Grant hauled in 110 passing yards. Robert Kelly has seven catches for 37 yards and a touchdown.
