Although we're currently in the thick of the Big East basketball race, spring football for the seven remaining Big East schools is not that far away. In fact, Cincinnati opens its spring football camp in less than two weeks. Several Big East schools will need to make the most of spring practice to either get used to new coaches, or welcome a number of early enrollees that will be counted on for early playing time.
Rutgers and Pittsburgh will get their first look at new head coaches Kyle Flood and Paul Chryst, respectively. For Rutgers, spring will be devoted to getting used to the new coaches and settling the quarterback question between Chas Dodd and Gary Nova. In Pittsburgh, the Panthers will also try to settle a quarterback battle with Tino Sunseri and...himself, while transitioning to Chryst's run-heavy, more pro-style offense after an ill-fated year in Todd Graham's spread, no-huddle offense. Connecticut could have a three way battle for quarterback, and there's no sense in trying to get them to settle on one now, since Pasqualoni never settled on one at any time in the 2011 season.
Louisville and South Florida return a large number of starters from last year and will welcome several prominent transfers and early enrollees. Louisville will need Keith Brown and James Burgess to contribute at linebacker right away and spring practice will make that easier. South Florida will now have available for the 2012 season defensive back wide receiver Chris Dunkley. Dunkley transferred into South Florida and sat out last season. Note that South Florida has two spring football games. One at Raymond James Stadium, the other on campus at the school's new practice facilities.
