Waiting in the Wings: Marshall holds off UCF; Houston crushed by Memphis; SMU down in OT

Yes, I know this is late. I was on vaycay, and writing reports is very difficult on an iPad.

UCF had a hard-fought match before going down to hosts Marshall, 65-64. It was back-and-forth for the first 15 minutes, then UCF played from behind most of the way. The Knights took the lead late, but a foolhardy foul at the death allowed the Herd to take the win.

Keith Clanton had 14 points, and Isaiah Sykes had 10 points. Each had 8 rebounds. Tristan Spurlock had 12 points off the bench.

Elsewhere, Memphis, everyone's favorite wannabe mid-major Cinderella, went in and crushed Houston, 89-55. (5,146) It was no contest pretty much from the start. Didn't help that the Cougars went cold for half of the second half, suffering an 18-0 run.

Alandise Harris had 18 points. Jonathon Simmons had 16 points off the bench.

Southern Methodist tried to re-write an old script, but ended up losing to UTEP as usual, 70-64 in OT. The Mustangs have not done well against UTEP, losing 16 of their previous 17 contests. While they led for most of the second half, the Miners were able to catch up and force overtime, where SMU could not keep up.

Jalen Jones had 12 points, and Jeremiah Samarrippas had 11.

In Wednesday action, UCF (13-4, 3-1) hosts Memphis (12-5, 3-0), and SMU (9-8, 1-2) hosts Houston (9-8, 1-3).
