The Xavier Musketeers and their 3-0 record will be put to the test on Monday night. The Musketeers host the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, who are also unbeaten through this point of the season. EKU defeated North Florida and Charleston Southern last week to go to 2-0, and now will face their sternest test of the season by far.
BOth teams are certainly seeking better on offense going into this game. Though to be fair, there are levels to that. The Musketeers are looking to pack more onto some goodish to great performances on the floor. EKU, meanwhile, is hoping to vastly improve their numbers. They’ve shot just 16.1 percent from the perimeter in their first two games, a menacingly bad number that is half of what the D1 average is (32.6 percent thus far).
Defensively though, these two teams have been pretty solid so far. EKU has been forcing turnovers at an extremely high rate. Their TO% to this point is at 30.5 percent, and while they played some very low-grade mid-majors, that’s still a very eye-popping number. Xavier will have to keep their games clean, which to be fair, they have to a point. Their TO% of 13.9 percent on offense is 30th in the nation thus far.
The Musketeers have been absolutely fierce in interior defense. Through the first three games, they’ve allowed just 29.3 percent of 2-point tries against them to be made. That ranks 3rd in the country right now behind Alabama and fellow Big East rep, Marquette. Losing some of their length from last season doesn’t appear to be bothering them in the early goings, and considering that’s where EKU’s strength has been this season, that could prove pivotal in this matchup.
