Xavier and UConn land commitments, and a few big targets make big decisions and final cuts.

UConn lands a 2022 commit at the buzzer, as former Denver commit Yarin Hasson (Israel/Maccabi Rishon LeZion) takes his talents to Storrs, Conn. instead.

Xavier also nabbed its second four-star 2023 commit this month, with Reid Ducharme (Boston, Mass./Brewster Academy) opting to join the Musketeers. He joins Trey Green, who committed on Aug. 6.

It’s still early, but UConn, Marquette and Xavier are the only Big East schools with multiple 2023 commits so far.

Marquette gets its second 2023 commit, headlining a busy week on the recruiting trail.

A busy Thursday headlines the latest recruiting update.

Four-star 2023 forward Al Amadou (Quakertown, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) chose Marquette over a final five list that also included Georgia Tech, St. John’s, San Diego and Miami. Amadou is Smart’s second class of 2023 commit, joining fellow four-star prospect Zaide Lowery (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo).

There were also a couple of key announcements by 2023 players Mouhamed Dioubate (Queens, N.Y./Putnam Science Academy), a four-star forward that removed St. John’s and Providence from consideration, as well as four-star 2023 guard Elmarko Jackson (Richland, N.J./South Kent School), who announced his final 11 list. Villanova made the cut, but DePaul, St. John’s and Seton Hall did not.

Get in the zone, Mo-zone!

Bryson Mozone

Height: 6-6

Former School: South Carolina Upstate

New School: Georgetown

Years Remaining: One

Recruiting Ranking: Unranked

2021-22 Stats: 15.8 ppg/5.7 rpg/1.3 apg/33.2 mpg; 44.6%/38.6%/85.6%

Bryson Mozone is one of the more interesting Big East transfers of this cycle.

After four years at South Carolina Upstate, Mozone decided to transfer for his last season and ultimately ended up making the jump to Georgetown and the Big East. Only Eral Penn, the LIU-to-DePaul transfer, played in a conference that placed lower than the Big South last year in KenPom’s conference rankings. This is ignoring players like Zach Wrightsil and Da’Sean Nelson who are making the jump from the NAIA and JUCO levels, respectively.

While it may be a big adjustment for Mozone, he was a very successful player at SC Upstate. He surpassed 1,000 points in his career there and earned Second Team All-Big South honors as a senior. He was incredibly efficient, making nearly 50 percent of his twos and 40 percent of his threes last season while sinking over 85 percent of his free throws. He was also the Spartans’ leading rebounder.

However, in just 20 career games against top-100 opponents, Mozone’s shooting percentage inside the arc dipped to around 35 percent. While he was still able to shoot from deep, his ability to match up with Big East size will be a question given his thin frame.

What’s His Game?

Despite his 6-6 size and length, Mozone prefers to play from the outside in. He took nearly as many shots outside the 3-point line (177) as he did within it (200) last year. His shot has been remarkably consistent, never dipping below his freshman year mark of 37.1 percent and remaining between 38.6 and 38.8 percent each of his next three seasons.

Not only is Mozone comfortable playing away from the paint, but he has exceptional range. Check out this deep shot he hit against Tennessee last season.

“I’m looking forward to the addition of Bryson Mozone to the 2022-23 squad. I think he will be a great asset to our team. His ability to stretch the floor and play multiple positions will be important for our team going forward.” - Head Coach Patrick Ewing on Bryson Mozone

On paper, Mozone has more production than most transfers coming to the conference. If he can follow the path of former-Providence starter Noah Horchler, who made a similar leap from North Florida and carried his shooting rebounding ability with him, Mozone could be a starter and very successful Big East player. Horchler, however, had a year to sit and practice with the team and add weight in the strength and condition program. Even with that time, he still struggled with his size on defense at points. Mozone will be thrust into the fire immediately. Horchler also had two inches on the Georgetown-transfer, inches that provided valuable on the boards.

Mozone’s floor should be as a capable role player off the bench. He should be able to stretch defenses and give Georgetown a scoring touch deep into the rotation. If he successfully adjusts to the Big East, he could be a true asset for the Hoyas all season long.

Depending on where coach Ewing wants to use him on the floor, Mozone will be battling with Brandon Murray, Wayne Bristol Jr., and Akok Akok for playing time.

As a freshman, Ali made 11 starts but managed just 35 total points. He took a step forward as a sophomore, starting all 23 games, but finished fourth on the Zips in scoring. It wasn’t until his junior year that Ali gained the attention of the power conferences.

As a junior, Ali untapped his ability as a scorer, finishing the year averaging 13.9 points per game. He and Hunter should also be effective at finding space off the ball and hitting shots from deep.

Newark, NJ native Al-Amir Dawes took four visits in the fall of 2018. Three of them were to Big East schools - Seton Hall, St. John’s and Providence - but the consensus four-star chose to play in the ACC at Clemson.

After three seasons down south, Dawes chose to come back to his hometown Seton Hall Pirates.

Dawes made 26 starts as a true freshman at Clemson and averaged 9.0 points, good enough for fourth on the Tigers. His playing time dipped a little as a sophomore, but his scoring remained the same. Dawes saw his shooting improve from his first year to his second, jumping from 38.1 to 42.1 percent from the field.

As a junior, his playing time returned to his freshman year levels and he embraced his role as a perimeter player. The result? A jump to 11.3 points per game, second-best for the team, and an average of 2.5 made threes a night.

Dawes is a pure shooter through and through. More than 65 percent of his career shots have come from beyond the 3-point line; that number got as high as nearly 72 percent last season.
What’s His Role?

Dawes should be a two-year starter for Seton Hall should he use both remaining years of eligibility. He and Jamir Harris both rank in the top-ten for most three-pointers made last season by next year’s Big East players, and that duo should be productive for an offense that struggled down the stretch last season. A backcourt with both of them and Kadary Richmond should be effective next season with the potential to be one of the better units in the Big East.

Defensively, there will be question marks given his size. However, the energy is clearly there, and Dawes is a veteran now playing under a head coach that led a very successful defense last year.

Keeping up with the Wildcats by recapping the busiest month in the recruiting season

The month of July is widely regarded as the busiest month for college basketball coaches in the off-season in terms of recruiting. In Kyle Neptune’s first summer at the helm, he wasted no time picking out the talent he had an eye for.

During Neptune’s first stint with the Wildcats, he was the main recruiter for a majority of players on the roster. After Jay Wright’s departure and Neptune’s arrival, only one player entered the transfer portal (Bryan Antoine, who, arguably, was going to enter the portal regardless) and nobody decommitted. It seems that Neptune is picking up right where he left off on the recruiting trail by developing a sense of trust, comfort and assurance. Let’s highlight some of the players he has offered a scholarship to over the last month.

Elmarko Jackson

The first player Villanova offered over the last month was Elmarko Jackson hailing from Richland, New Jersey. Although Jackson is from New Jersey, he plays his high school basketball at the renowned South Kent School in Connecticut. Jackson is a 6’3, 185 pound combo guard who has exceptional size and strength already. His is a prototypical Villanova guard and I can see why Neptune offered him as early as he did. Villanova was not the only one to offer him early however, take a look at all the offers he has already:

Thanks to all of the schools that have been recruiting me. I plan to cut my list in the next few weeks & take my official visits & announce my commitment in the Fall. pic.twitter.com/O5PUrCH8U8
— Elmarko (@ElmarkoJ) July 26, 2022

Elmarko is already a four-star prospect in the class of 2023 and I would not be surprised to see that change to a five-star rating before the high school season kicks off next year. Jackson is incredibly smart and a versatile defender capable of covering multiple positions. He looks college ready right now and he would be at the top of my priority list for any college lucky enough to make the cut on his preferred list of schools.

And now the recent Class of 2024 offers...

Jalil Bethea

Next up, we have Jalil Bethea from Archbishop Wood High School in Warrington, PA. Does anybody know the last time Villanova got an under-ranked guard from Archbishop Wood? Oh that’s right, it was just COLLIN GILLESPIE. Gillespie has already given his seal of approval for the offer replying to a tweet online regarding Bethea calling him an ‘absolute sniper’. When you get called a sniper from THE sniper himself, you know you are well on your way.

Bethea participated in the Nike EYBL E16 Peach Jam where he competed for Team Final alongside some of the best high school recruits in the country. He was named a Peach Jam Standout by national level scout Grady Majors, and his stock has been on a meteoric rise ever since. Most national outlets still have Bethea unranked, but that is bound to change soon. As a late bloomer, Bethea already holds offers from schools such as UCLA, VCU, Temple and of course, Villanova.

Jalil Bethea is exactly what Collin Gillespie called him, a sniper. He is money from the outside with a killer instinct. In the PIAA 6A Playoffs, Bethea had a Philadelphia Catholic League playoff record 37 points on 11-12 shooting from deep. The summer of Jalil Bethea continued with a 33 point outing in the Peach Jam on only 13 shots (7-10 from 3). Neptune offering Bethea this early will hopefully play out in Villanova’s favor because this kid is going to be special.

Sir Mohammed

Son of former Kentucky Wildcat, Nazr Mohammed, Nasir ‘Sir’ Mohammed is a four-star shooting guard from Charlotte, North Carolina. Sir already holds at least fourteen offers, from schools such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Stanford, Penn State, Xavier and more. Stop me if you have heard this before, but the Villanova recruit has outstanding size, length, and IQ, especially for his age.

Mohammed played from Team Curry on the AAU circuit this summer and was a standout amongst his peers. He plays his high school basketball at Myers Park in Charlotte where he really showcases his already well rounded game.

I could type about this kid’s skill set for hours, but I’d figure I would show you instead. Above, is my favorite clip of all the highlights compiled from Mohammed. It is about a minute long clip of just pure dominance. He looks like a man amongst boys getting whatever he wants, wherever he wants. He is scrappy, smart and would make for a perfect addition to this recruiting class.

Mohammed is already on the record saying that he grew up a Kentucky fan and that his whole family went there including his dad who was a Wildcat legend. I mean, who could blame him honestly. But the recruiting process is unique to each and every prospect and if I know one thing about Mohammed it is that he is going to continue to do his thing, develop and get better. The cards will fall where they may but they will be a byproduct of his imminent success. Villanova would be a perfect fit for Mohammed in my opinion based off of his work ethic and their culture, and as we know anything could happen.

Caleb Williams

Last but certainly not least, we have Caleb Williams from Sidwell Friends School in Bethesda, Maryland. The same school that produced Villanova legends Josh Hart and Saddiq Bey.

Sorry Villanova football fans, this is not Caleb Williams the quarterback of USC, however luckily for Villanova basketball fans this is Caleb Williams a 6’7 lefty sharpshooter guard/forward mix who is incredibly effective on both sides of the ball. Williams may honestly be one of my favorite prospects from the class of 2024. Like every other recruit Williams is smart, efficient and tenacious on defense, but what I believe what really separates him from the rest are his intangibles. Williams seems almost allergic to pressure.

Take this clip for example, this is not just some open gym runs with your buddies, this is for the DCSAA Class AA State Title. They won the game by one point. The wherewithal to know where he is on the floor, time his jump perfectly, use his size to create space and finish on the biggest stage is simply incredible.

Aside from his mamba mentality, Williams footwork and passing are other key areas of his game. He is an outstanding mover without the ball and can set his teammates up to succeed in any circumstance. Williams is just a winner.

All four of these recruits are winners for that matter. If Kyle Neptune can land any one of these four it will be a successful recruiting class, but the more the merrier. Another positive I take away from this recruiting class is that not all of these guys are ranked (yet). Neptune knows what he is looking for in a player and is finding all the players that check all the boxes that he constructed. I know it is early, and nothing is even remotely close to set in stone yet, but I am liking what I am seeing from Neptune and this coaching staff so far and I hope they can keep the pressure on these core four moving forward.
