The Georgetown Hoyas pulled off a stunner the last time we saw them. Out in Omaha, the Hoyas upset the Creighton Bluejays earlier in the week in what was one of the biggest upsets of the whole season. Now, the Hoyas will look to pull off another big upset.
Walking into this game as double-digit underdogs, the Hoyas take on the Villanova Wildcats. ‘Nova themselves was bitten hard by the upset bug earlier this week. They succumbed to the red-hot St. John’s Red Storm, who dubbed them for a double-digit win.
Can the Hoyas pull off a second upset in a row? It will be a tall task. The Hoyas were able to succeed on Wednesday in part to a flurry of 3-pointers made. They knocked down 10 of them, which isn’t actually a rarity. It’s seventh time in their 13 games played that they’ve hit on double-digit 3-pointers. Last time they faced ‘Nova, they connected on just seven. So, they will have to hope for much different results in this go-around.
When Villanova got trucked by St. John’s, the key was the Johnnies’ suppression. The Wildcats were held to under 40 percent on 2-pointers and under 30 percent on 3-pointers. It’s rare to achieve one of those against ‘Nova, but the Red Storm were able to pull off both. The issue comes with Georgetown’s defense in conference play. They’ve been sluggish, posting the second-worst AdjDE of all Big East teams in league action. Additionally, they rank eighth out of 11 in 3-point defense, allowing 36 percent of 3-pointers to be made. Their interior defense has been really good, but we know ‘Nova will shoot it.
We’ll see if they can pull off the upset, but Georgetown is a heavy dog for good reason, most likely. I wouldn’t expect Villanova to come out and lose two in a row in such a fashion. But, I suppose anything can hapepn right?
