The Seton Hall Pirates have taken a commanding lead atop the Big East Conference. The Hall is 10-1 through their first 11 games of Big East play, and hold a three-game lead over the Marquette Golden Eagles, the Villanova Wildcats and their opponents Wednesday night, the Creighton Bluejays.
The Pirates might have been tripped up on February 1 by the Xavier Musketeers. But since then they’ve rebounded to defeat the Georgetown Hoyas and Villanova, piecing together yet another winning streak, their fifth of the entire season. It would certainly take a lot to get up to 10 again, but they have been tough to beat twice in a row. In fact, it’s only happened just once this season.
Creighton, meanwhile, has won five of their last six games coming into the night, and six of the last eight dating back to January 11. The Jays won their last outing against the St. John’s Red Storm in Omaha on Saturday, with their only loss in the last six games coming to the Providence Friars a week ago. Ty-Shon Alexander has been a catalyst for them, averaging over 17 points game in this run, including two 24-point outings. Mitch Ballock has complemented him nicely, averaging 14.5 points per game over this six-game stretch.
Assuming both teams bring their best, this should be a fascinating encounter. Seton Hall’s offense hasn’t been sharp by many metrics, but their defense could pose a problem for the typically stout Bluejay offense. CU has played competent-enough defense that should give them some good results here, but ultimately we’ll see how it plays out. This game will be played in Newark and is the first between the two programs this season.
