The Seton Hall Pirates are traversing through the seas of the Big East with ease. The Pirates have won nine games in a row dating back to December 19 and have gotten off to a blistering 7-0 start to Big East play. Myles Powell is playing like a Big East Player of the Year frontrunner and a boisterous contender for National Player of the Year, as well. All this while Sandro Mamukelashvili is still rehabbing from his injury. So things are going pretty well in South Orange, to say the least.
Seton Hall will be hoping to stay hot, as they welcome the DePaul Blue Demons to New Jersey on Wednesday night. The Blue Demons’ 12-1 start seems to be a thing of the past now, as they’ve won just one game in Big East play so far. The Blue Demons are 1-6, and have lost two in a row coming into Wednesday. They have already lost to Seton Hall this season, having fallen 74-66 in Chicago in each team’s Big East opener on December 30.
DePaul’s offense simply has to get it going in this game. They’ve fallen off tremendously and will be in for a doozy against the Seton Hall defense. The Pirates are putting the clamps on just about everybody, as they rank highly in just about every defensive category. For a team like DePaul, who ranks 99th in AdjOE, 157th in eFG%, 121st in 2PT FG% and 212th in 3PT FG%, then they may be in for a rough go at it.
The Pirates, meanwhile, will have to keep up their recipe for success. Defense is not exactly an issue for the Blue Demons. While they rank 132nd in 3PT FG% allowed and 80th in eFG% allowed, they still force turnovers at a high rate and have kept teams in check relatively speaking on inside shots. They have also been great at shot-blocking and creating steals, and Seton Hall has been merely average at keeping the ball in their possession. This seems to be what DePaul needs to get going in this one and, conversely, what Seton Hall must prevent from happening.
