Fresh off a 46-point win over the Sacred Heart Pioneers, the Providence Friars are back in action on Saturday.

The Friars will take the floor at the Dunk for an afternoon showdown with the NJIT Highlanders. The Highlanders come into this one 0-1, as Brian Kennedy’s squad did not fare well in their opener against the Colgate Raiders. They fell 80-75 in that one and despite clawing back from down 19 at one point, they were not able to get into the win column.

Providence will be looking to pick the Highlanders apart in this one. The Friars had some great results in their opener, especially so from deep. They shot 47.1 percent from long range as a team, which might suit them well against NJIT. The Highlanders allowed Colgate to shoot 40 percent from 3-point land, so they may be susceptible to damage being dealt their way again. Alpha Diallo, Luwane Pipkins and A.J. Reeves all shot 40 percent or better on the night, and may well replicate that success again.

Speaking of Pipkins, the Massachusetts Minutemen will be one to watch in other phases as well. He had seven assists in the win over Sacred Heart, proving to be the kind of distributor Ed Cooley was looking for this year. The Friars as a whole owned that department, as they came away with 31 total assists on the night. Eight of them also belonged to one David Duke, who had a great night on the floor. We’ll see if these two can get it going again in that category. They will be in business, if so.

For NJIT, it will be all about getting more balance. Zach Cooks had 23 points, Shyquan Gibbs put up 16 while San Antonio Brinson scored 15 points in the loss to Colgate. Nobody else, however, recorded more than six points. If they can achieve more balance, they may be able to give the Friars some run.
