Year 3 of the Patrick Ewing Era tips off Wednesday night as the Georgetown Hoyas take the floor in D.C. Fresh off an improved campaign off Year 1 and an NIT appearance, the Hoyas are looking for bigger and better things this time around. They’ll have the opportunity to start off right against the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers.
The Mount is not projected to do too well this year. They were picked to finish seventh by the coaches of the Northeast Conference in the Preseason Poll. They also did not have any players featured on the Preseason All-NEC Team either. This all comes after a 9-22 finish a year ago, where they went 6-12 in the NEC and finished in ninth place.
Their leading returning scorer is Omar Habwe, who averaged 9.4 points as a sophomore a year ago. Malik Jefferson is the team’s second-leading scoring returnee, as the Hopewell, VA native averaged 8.5 points in his freshman year. Youth is the name of the game for The Mount as they have seven scholarship sophomores and three scholarship freshmen. There are only two scholarship juniors on the team: Habwe and Brandon Leftwich, and no seniors on this team.
Can The Mount’s youthful exuberance lead to an upset? I mean, I guess anything’s possible, but I probably wouldn’t count on it. Georgetown should be able to handle them with relative ease. I’m intrigued to see what James Akinjo, Mac McClung and Josh LeBlanc do in their first games as sophomores. All three made significant impacts as freshmen and could be poised for big things. Jamorko Pickett will be a name to watch, as well as Omer Yurtseven. The N.C. State Wolfpack transfer is a talented big who’ll add another dimension to this Hoyas team. And he may very well get it going in his first night in uniform.
