The Marquette Golden Eagles had a terrific 2018-19 season. But plenty has changed since the Golden Eagles were trucked by Ja Morant and the Murray State Racers. And we’ll all get a chance to see the new-look Golden Eagles on Tuesday night when they open the 2019-20 season.

Their adversary on Tuesday evening in Milwaukee is the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds. The Greyhounds have been rather woeful since the 2012-13 season. They’ve hit over 11 wins just once in that time period, and are coming off an 11-21 season under then-first year head coach Tavaras Hardy.

Hardy is still patrolling the sidelines for the Greyhounds as they enter 2020, and things could get better. They were picked to finish fourth in the league in the preseason, behind the Colgate Raiders, Bucknell Bison and the American University Eagles. They have one of the best players in the conference in Andrew Kostecka, who was selected to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team after an outstanding year. He averaged 19.8 points — tops in the entire league — 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game and earned All-Patriot League First Team and All-Patriot League Defensive Team honors. The Greyhounds also return two other double figure scorers in Chuck Champion and Isaiah Hart, as they along with Kostecka provide a solid enough trio to do some damage.

That being said, they come into this game as a heavy underdog. And for good reason. The Golden Eagles pack a serious punch, the guy delivering most of the punchouts is Markus Howard. Howard had another outstanding season last year, finishing with a mark of over 40 percent from the 3-point line for the third consecutive year. Howard’s not only one of the best and brightest from the Big East, but in the entire nation as well.

That being said, MU will be looking for scoring from some different options this year. Gone are The Brothers Hauser, as Sam Hauser and Joey Hauser departed the program in the offseason for the Virginia Cavaliers and the Michigan State Spartans respectively. Sam and Joey were the second- and third-leading scorers on the team last year, with Sam averaging nearly 15 points per game. Tuesday’s game could give us a good idea about who’ll complement Howard in the offense and provide another scoring punch.
