Typically, the Marquette Golden Eagles don’t meet the Wisconsin Badgers until a little later on in the season. Evidently though, these two teams were too eager to wait until the month of December to face off. The Golden Eagles and Badgers are fixing to get it on in a very early season clash between two strong Wisconsin adversaries.
The Golden Eagles are 2-0 on the young season as they come into this rivalry game. They took out the Loyola-MD Greyhounds in their first game, 88-53. Then they stormed ahead to beat the Purdue Boilermakers, also of the Big Ten Conference, earlier this week. That Gavitt Games W saved the Big East from a worser fate, and MU is certainly still beaming in the aftermath.
On the flipside, Wisconsin is 2-1 entering Sunday. After losing their first game to the St. Marys (CA) Gaels, the Badgers took down the Eastern Illinois Panthers and McNeese State Cowboys in short order this past week. Those bounce back wins certainly helped, but they of course weren’t the greatest of competition. After obtaining Ws over the #235 and #308 ranked teams on KenPom, they’ll now face the #12 ranked squad in Marquette. With a loss already to the #40 ranked Gaels, it’s hard not to wonder how this game will fare.
That’s not to say Wisconsin is bad per se, but their 3-point shooting has certainly been. You can’t say the same about Marquette, who have one of the most best marks in the nation through its early goings, and the very best in the Big East. Amongst high-major teams, only the TCU Horned Frogs, California Golden Bears, Tennessee Volunteers and Texas Tech Red Raiders have better marks than the Golden Eagles so far. Not too shabby eh? We’ll see if 3-point shooting is the difference in this game, as the stark contrast could make for a big day for the Golden Eagles in Madison.
