Big East Announces Updated COVID-19 Cancellation Policy

Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament - Finals

On Thursday afternoon, the Big East announced an updated game cancellation policy for men’s and women’s basketball.

For the 2021-22 season, any team with less than the minimum five players able to participate in a game will forfeit. There will not be an exception for cases of COVID-19. Their opponent will receive a win.

If both teams are unable to field a team for any given game, then both teams will forfeit the game and receive a loss.

These rules apply for 2021-22 Big East conference games. Last season, games were cancelled and postponed to adjust for COVID. That will not be the case this time around.

This new policy was approved by the Big East Board of Directors and “was developed in concert with the conference’s Health and Safety Working Group, head team physicians and athletics directors,” to avoid scheduling complications.
