Marquette hosts Villanova Wednesday night

Can the Golden Eagles pick up another big win, or will Nova keep on rolling?

NCAA Basketball: Villanova at Marquette Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Marquette Golden Eagles have been one of the most confusing teams in all of college basketball this year. They have wins over Wisconsin and Creighton, making Marquette the only team in the nation to have two wins over teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll, but the Golden Eagles have also taken four losses, and while none of the losses are bad (Oklahoma State, UCLA, Seton Hall, Xavier) it has been tough for Marquette to build and sustain momentum this season.

The Golden Eagles come into this game at 5-4, and 1-2 in Big East play. Koby McEwen, Dawson Garcia, and DJ Carton have been very helpful in replacing Markus Howard’s offensive production, but as previously noted, consistency has been the biggest issue for Marquette.

Villanova, on the other hand, is humming along. Aside from their overtime blip in Bubbleville against Virginia Tech, the Wildcats have looked like one of the nation’s three or four best teams so far this year. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is putting together a National Player of the Year campaign, averaging 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season while shooting 56% from the field. Collin Gillespie has been solid in his role of leading and facilitating the Cats’ offense.

Marquette has won three of their last four games in Milwaukee against Villanova, but obviously this year is quite different with having no fans in attendance.
