Coming into Tuesday night’s game between the Marquette Golden Eagles and Oklahoma State Cowboys, fans were clamoring about the matchup featuring top freshmen Cade Cunningham and Dawson Garcia as being one to watch.
Unfortunately for Marquette fans, Cunningham and the Cowboys got the upper hand on Garcia and the Golden Eagles, leaving Milwaukee with a 70-62 victory.
The game looked like it would be a back and forth between the two players all night, as Garcia hit Marquette’s first shot and Cunningham hit Oklahoma State’s, but that wasn’t the case, as Garcia would score just two more points on the evening, finishing 2-9 with four points whereas Cunningham would finish 6-11 with 15 points.
Marquette came out ablaze, going up 15-4 and getting Oklahoma State to call a timeout in the first five minutes of the game. Marquette’s lead got up to 19-7, and then the scoring stopped, as an OSU 15 point run put the Cowboys up 22-19. Marquette would get back on track and take a narrow 35-32 lead into the half, but there were definite warning signs present.
Marquette had no answer for Rondel Walker, who finished with 16 points and went 8-9 from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles also turned the ball over 24 times, which led to 34 points for Oklahoma State, which is something Marquette needs to get figured out ASAP, ideally before Friday when Wisconsin comes to town.
Koby McEwen finished with 21 points for Marquette, as he was one of the lone bright spots for the Golden Eagles.
