Following their squeaked out win over Saint Peters on Wednesday, St. John’s make the quick turnaround to play host to the La Salle Explorers on Thanksgiving as part of a feast of games on the day.
This game will be the season opener for the Explorers, who are coming into this season with a young roster and the hopes of managing to be in contention in the Atlantic 10. St. John’s, on the other hand, will look to this game to improve where they left off against Saint Peters on Wednesday night. It was a 76-75 final score with the edge coming for the Johnnies in the form of a three pointer off of the shot of Vince Cole in the final seconds of the game. Not quite a buzzer beater, but close enough to give the Peacocks little room to operate.
There were a lot of positive to take away from their game on Wednesday, the biggest of which was the play of some of the newcomers to the roster for the Red Storm. The three leading scorers against Peacocks were all new to the team with Vince Cole, Posh Alexander and Isaih Moore all leading the way and providing a glimpse of what is to come.
While that is great the biggest takeaway from Wednesday night and what Mike Anderson will hopefully be mindful off coming into Thursday’s contest will be the fact that this team still needs some time to fully gel. It is evident that the lack of prep time is there and as a result St. John’s struggled to fully get into gear with stretches of good play but would out allowing Saint Peter’s back into the game.
The most notable of which came towards the end of the second half where St. John’s went 4+ minutes without a field goal until the aforementioned Cole three pointer. There is a lot of talent on this team but it will take time for everything to get into place. The good news is this contest against La Salle provides an excellent opportunity to work on their play against an opponent that will provide a challenge but is also a game that favors the Red Storm as well.
On the La Salle side of things the players who St. John’s have to be mindful would be a mixture of Ayinde Hikim, David Beatty, last season’s leading scorer, Scott Spencer, an excellent secondary scoring option, and Sherif Kenny on of their best options off of the bench. They are projected to be a the lower of the A-10 but are a part of a mid-major conference that plays like a power conference.
It should be a fun game and definitely something to tune into while waiting for the turkey or pies to finish cooking. Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy their feast of basketball games along with their feast of food.
