After spending the early part of this week thinking this game may not happen due to Baylor having to pull out of the tournament due to COVID issues, it was saved by Rhode Island filling in for the Bears. That’s certainly a relief, because the more we get to watch this Villanova team this year, the better.
The Wildcats had a “down year” last season, finishing 24-7 and third in the Big East at 11-5. Saddiq Bey left the program for the NBA Draft, and that’s it. Everyone else is back. Collin Gillespie is back and on the Preseason Big East First Team. So is Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. The Wildcats were the only team with two players on the list. Justin Moore is on the Preseason Big East Second Team. The NCAA changed the rules to limit offense last year so it might not be a carbon copy but if you liked the 2015-16 and 2017-18 Villanova teams (you did), you’ll love this one.
Boston College went 13-18 last season as ACC play really took its toll on the Eagles. They have a pair of old friends that Big East fans will recognize, as former DePaul forward Frederick Scott and former Providence guard and UConn commit Makai Ashton-Langford play for Boston College now. Additionally, BC returns leading scorer Jay Heath (13.1 ppg last season) and leading rebounder and All-ACC forward Steffon Mitchell. The Wildcats should be able to contain these two, but could be in for a closer game than anticipated if not.
