After ending 2019 on a six game winning streak, the start of 2020 wasn’t so kind to the Villanova Wildcats. In their second Big East game of the season, they couldn’t stop Marquette’s Markus Howard and Koby McEwen. The duo combined for 51 points in what was a 71-60 win for the Eagles. Despite holding their opponents to shooting just 37 percent from the field, the Wildcats were dealt their third loss of the season. But it wasn’t like Nova’s offense was helping out either. Villanova shot 35.3 percent from the field and 23.7 percent from three. In their next game against Creighton the offense still shot around the same percentages but it was a much different result. The Wildcats walked out with a 64-59 victory on the road. Collin Gillespie scored 24 points and 7 rebounds as Nova added their 11th win and improved their conference record to 2-1. They also found themselves in the AP Poll once again, slotting in at number 16 in this weeks edition. Now after two straight road games, Villanova is kicking off a four straight games at home and it all starts against the Georgetown Hoyas.
Like Villanova, Georgetown is coming into this game in good form. They lost their first game of 2020 against Seton Hall as they were down 17 at halftime and couldn’t battle back. However they responded with a 21 point victory over St. John’s. The Hoyas had a distributed offensive attack with five players scoring in double digits. They shot 43.3 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point land. This time around they were the ones with a big halftime lead and saw out the victory. Georgetown’s defense was everywhere, recording seven blocks and limiting the Red Storm to only shooting 35.3 percent from the field. The Hoyas, who have seven of their last eight, are now at 11-5 but are in the middle of the Big East standings because of their 1-2 conference record. This is a chance for them to get a marquee win to kick off their campaign in Big East play. After this game they play two home bouts next week against Creighton and Marquette.
