The Villanova Wildcats and Georgetown Hoyas will renew their rivalry yet again on Wednesday night in Washington D.C.
The Wildcats are coming into this game on the heels of a debilitating 71-65 loss to the St. John’s Red Storm. Jay Wright’s team was at the mercy of an enormous wave that Shamorie Ponds and the Johnnies drove through them at Madison Square Garden on Sunday evening. Refocusing is typically what they do, but the ‘Cats have lost two of their last three and are in danger of letting their standing at the top of the Big East standings go by the wayside now.
Meanwhile, Georgetown is hoping to snap out of their own woes. The Hoyas were rocked 90-75 by the Seton Hall Pirates last Wednesday in Newark. It was their second defeat in a row and their third in four games. At 15-10 and 5-7 in Big East play, it is time for the Hoyas to start making a run if they want to get into any serious NCAA Tournament consideration. That starts with ‘Nova and with matchups against Seton Hall and the Marquette Golden Eagles to follow the rest of the way, they’re not short on opportunity. They just have to make the most of it.
As always, your eyes should be on the likes of Phil Booth and Eric Paschall for the Wildcats, and Jessie Govan and the freshmen for Georgetown. But in their last go-around of course, it was Collin Gillespie who stole the attention away with 30 points and six made threes. James Akinjo and Mac McClung will have to keep him in check if they want to avoid a repeat performance from the former Philly Catholic League MVP. Paschall went off for 24 points in 40 minutes of action last time around while Booth had 14. Govan, meanwhile, has to hope for ANY kind of rebound as he had zero points in their last outing. Akinjo had 19 points and McClung had four.
