Marquette hosts Grambling State Tuesday evening

This should be a breeze for the Golden Eagles

NCAA Basketball: Marquette at Kansas State Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports

Following a ten-day layoff for final exams, the Marquette Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday evening as they welcome the Grambling State Tigers to Fiserv Forum Tuesday night.

While Grambling regularly checked in as one of the country’s worst teams per KenPom just a few short years ago, head coach Donte Jackson has started turning things around the past couple years, winning 17 games in each of the past two seasons. For context, Grambling won 17 games total from 2012-16.

None of this is to say the Golden Eagles should be concerned about the Tigers, as Grambling still well below average both offensively and defensively (301st and 247th, respectively), but the Tigers are less of a pushover than in years past.

Something Marquette could look to do in this game is develop more secondary scoring options. The Golden Eagles’ two losses this year have came largely due to Markus Howard getting bottled up and contained on offense. As the ringer of Big East play draws near, it’s important to make sure you’re in the best possible situation to win games. Tune ups like this one, and Marquette’s Saturday affair with North Dakota State could go a long way in helping the Golden Eagles find and fix any remaining shortcomings.

Marquette will have to pay close attention to Devante Jackson. The forward comes into this game averaging 15.0 points per game, the most among Grambling players.

In all, the Golden Eagles should be able to cruise to 8-2 after this one.
