Winning in Omaha is never easy, and Marquette figured that out the hard way. Down three with 0.8 seconds left in regulation, it looked all but over for the Golden Eagles. Creighton seemed destined to start off their Big East campaign by winning two out of their first three. All the Bluejays needed was to simply inbound the ball. They tried to get smart and throw it deep into their own front court.
The problem was that there was no Creighton player there and it ball bounced out of bounds on the other side. Marquette was given life, but time wasn’t on their side. The Golden Eagles needed a quality look and quickly. They got one when Sam Hauser caught the ball near scorer’s table. He quickly rose up and shot up a prayer of a shot. The ball seemed to wait for ages and finally went through the net, stunning everyone in the crowd.
The referees reviewed it and the call stood on the floor; in an improbable turn of events, this game was headed for overtime. There, Markus Howard took over for the Golden Eagles and sealed the victory. He scored the next 11 points in route to Marquette’s 106-104 victory. It was a stunning turn of events and something in which Golden Eagles fans couldn’t even process.
Marquette is now 13-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. But they face another tough test today.
The Seton Hall Pirates will be their opponents on Saturday, and they are currently second in the Big East. With a record of 12-4 on the year, the Pirates have some real momentum heading into this weekend. They have won three of their four first games in conference play with their most recent victory coming against Butler earlier in the week. It wasn’t pretty, but in the end, the Pirates escaped with a 76-75 victory. This was a solid bounce back performance after dropping a game in Chicago to the DePaul Blue Demons.
Seton Hall started off conference play by knocking off one of the better teams in the conference in St. John’s and now they must prove they can do it again against Marquette. This victory could go a long way in giving Myles Powell and the Pirates some confidence before their matchup with Villanova in two weeks.
