DePaul collapses down the stretch in brutal loss to Northwestern

Woof.

NCAA Basketball: Northwestern at DePaul Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

The Northwestern Wildcats sprung off a 25-0 run in the second half, as the DePaul Blue Demons saw a huge lead evaporate before their very eyes. The Blue Demons took a brutal loss on the chin, falling 75-68 to the Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston.

Things were going great for DePaul, and I do mean that unironically. The Blue Demons were up 12 on the Wildcats at the half and maintained their lead through the first few stanzas of the second half. But Northwestern went on a tear and the Blue Demons had absolutely no answer for it. They went nearly seven minutes without any points and eight minutes without a single field goal made from the field. They gave up six 3-pointers, including four in a row from the 6:01 mark to the 2:58 mark.

The ineptitude was strong, to say the very least. There’s no other real way of putting it. This was a debilitating, deflating and downright dubious loss for DePaul to take. It would be one thing to just lose by seven points and have that be it. But to give up a 25-0 run after being up 15 at the 9:48 mark is just... it’s unbelievable.

Femi Olujobi finished with a team-high 22 points in 8-of-12 from the field. He had eight rebounds and two assists as well. Devin Gage had 17 points and four boards with two assists and a steal, as well. Jalen Coleman-Lands and Eli Cain each had nine points, while Max Strus had eight points and nine rebounds, a team-high.

The Blue Demons play the Chicago State Cougars this coming Wednesday.
