The Xavier Musketeers are back in action again. After falling to rival Cincinnati last week, the Musketeers take the floor at Cintas Center on Saturday night, as they welcome the Eastern Kentucky Colonels to town.
EKU is riding a three-game winning streak as they come into this game with the same record as Xavier, that being 6-4. They’ve won four of their last five as well, with the lone loss coming against the vaunted Tennessee Volunteers. The Colonels are led by the scoring prowess of senior Nick Mayo. Mayo is one of the best scorers in the nation, currently tied for 10th in the nation at 24.4 points per game.
He’s tied with Robert Franks of the Washington State Cougars and is in the company of Xavier Hill-Mais, Justin James, Carsen Edwards, Justin Wright-Foreman, Mike Daum and Chris Clemons, among others. The Musketeers already know about Hill-Mais, having played him and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies earlier this season. But we’ll see if Mayo can provide a better punch than he did, as Hill-Mais dropped 30 on them in that contest.
Xavier has been skittish defensively this season, so don’t be surprised if Mayo has a good game. But despite that, Xavier is still probably going to win this game. The talent differential is there and it would take a monumental performance from Mayo to lead EKU to victory. The Musketeers were getting it together before the Cincy loss, having won four games in a row after starting off 2-3. They should be able to bounce back on Saturday night against EKU, and if they don’t? Well, then they might be in some trouble.
