The Georgetown Hoyas play host to the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks to open their season. Georgetown handily beat the Hawks last season, 83-57. Kaleb Johnson recorded a career-high 24 points while Jessie Govan finished the night with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

UMES returns the bulk of their team from last year, with the exception of a new head coach. Former Bethune Cookman head coach Clifford Reed is the interim head coach for the Hawks this season.

One notable departure from last season was leading rebounder Miryne Thomas. After putting up 11.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game in his freshman season, Thomas transferred to Ball State. Stopping Govan will be an even tougher task than usual for the Hawks, as the Hoyas big man looks to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament in his final season on the hilltop.

The Hoyas didn’t play any exhibition games, so this is the nation’s first chance to see Mac McClung throw down some sweet dunks. Aside from that, it will be interesting to see how Greg Malinowski, James Akinjo, Grayson Carter, and Josh LeBlanc fit the Hoyas rotation. They’re suddenly one of the Big East’s deepest teams on paper, but it remains to be seen if the talent will translate to the court. Against UMES, it should.

Georgetown is 8-0 all-time against UMES, and 60-0 all-time against the MEAC.

The Hoyas also have a neat new court design, paying tribute to their uniforms of the Allen Iverson era. You can see that below.
