After putting up a valiant fight but falling short in overtime against the Auburn Tigers, the Xavier Musketeers find themselves in another early game Tuesday, as they’ll open day two of the Maui Invitational against the San Diego State Aztecs.
The Musketeers will undoubtedly be looking for a repeat performance from Paul Scruggs on Tuesday. Scruggs did a little bit of everything against the Tigers, leading the team with 16 points, hauling in seven rebounds, dishing out four assists, grabbing three steals, and swatting two blocks. Scruggs’ continued development on both ends of the court has been great to watch and is something to monitor all year.
The Musketeers will need to cut down on their turnovers though. Their season-high 22 plagued their upset bid against the Tigers. The good news for Xavier is 22 turnovers was an anomaly, as they are right around the national average for turnovers on the season. The bad news is that the Aztecs force turnovers higher than the national average. KenPom’s projection has this game as a coin flip, so ball security will be paramount for the Musketeers.
It will also be important that they slow down Devin Watson and Jalen McDaniels. Watson leads the team with 16.3 points per game, while McDaniels is at 13 points and seven rebounds per contest.
In all, this is a winnable game for Xavier, and a win could go a long way in building momentum early in the season.
