Four-star 2018 guard Brandon Slater has committed to the Villanova Wildcats.

Slater, a native of Fairfax, Virginia, announced the move on his personal Twitter page.

The Paul VI Catholic guard had held offers from the Miami-Florida Hurricanes, Maryland Terrapins, Louisville Cardinals, Syracuse Orange and Temple Owls among others. In the end though, it’s Jay Wright and the ‘Cats who pick up a victory and what is the first member of their 2018 class.

Slater is regarded as the top player in the state of Virginia by 247Sports Composite. He tops a list that features David McCormack and Kenneth Nwuba of Oak Hill Academy as well as Florent Thamba of Mountain Mission School in Grundy, VA. Slater is ranked fourth among shooting guards, standing behind five-stars Romeo Langford and Keldon Johnson as well as Ayo Dosunmu of Chicago.

As mentioned, this is the first commit for Wright for 2018, and one that makes a lot of sense. The guard position will be something of a need going forward as the only players scheduled to be on scholarship as of right now that year are Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo and Collin Gillespie. ‘Nova has done a great job in building their frontcourt for the future, but it would appear that the need for backcourt help is eased a bit now with Slater now being in the fold.
